WOW! Day 3 was so filled with engagement! I think the students had the best time with the different activities and working together on their T-shirt designs. Day three for me has been the best day so far and now I realize that we only have one more full day left. I enjoyed engaging the students in different conversations about what is happening nationally and connecting it to all of the issues we have talked about thus far. I can tell the students are enjoying themselves and care about the topic.

What went well:
-giving them a chance to compete against one another during the "Change the Narrative" game was really fun! Once they got a handle on the idea of the activity, they got really into it. Above are some of the quotes from real news articles that they were asked to change above.

-The T-shirt designs are really coming together and the students are thinking deeply about how to represent themselves and their cultures in positive ways.

What to improve:
-Keeping everyone on tract with the timing of different activities was difficult today. They were super invested in their shirts and were often working on them during other parts of the class day. A solution to this for tomorrow would be to complete everything we want to discuss first before handing out anything for them to work on at their desk.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2030352697022808.post-42728455822952640682019-07-10T17:10:00.000-07:002019-07-10T17:10:08.543-07:00Connecting the Dots Day 3 Reflection

Another great day is over! Today it was amazing to see the kids so energized. They were participatory and engaged. They definitely enjoy the ice-breakers that we do. Especially the dream house seemed to have left some good impact on them. That is good, isn't it since that is what we want to achieve?

The Kahoot activity was fun. They listened to the important facts that was shared with them on global health and wellness. Some of them got disconnected at some point so keeping the lesson not too long was definitely a good idea.

Kids have progressed in the spoken word but we need to work faster on the backdrop.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2030352697022808.post-39688518310719323072019-07-10T12:33:00.001-07:002019-07-10T12:33:35.110-07:00Cultural Bias in Media: Day Two Reflection

Day 2 was so informative! My favorite international issue was about the Rohingya people of Myanmar. This is an issue that I was not informed about before this experience and I am loving how much I am learning along side the students!

What went well:

-The engagement and conversations about each of the videos and what cultural biases they showed and how the narrative could be changed went very well! I think that a lot of the students have a lot to say and all of the comments are very intellectual and relevant to the topic.

- The students were super engaged with beginning their T-shirt ideas! You can tell that they are truly thinking hard about their designs to create their own identity and break down any cultural biases they have seen in their communities.

What needs work:
- the students seemed very tired and a lot of the day required a lot of sitting and talking. More activities will be included to engage the students and get them up and moving!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2030352697022808.post-72196725721419908912019-07-09T12:50:00.002-07:002019-07-09T12:51:35.587-07:00<span style="background-color: orange; font-family: "helveticaneue"; font-size: large;">Group 4 - Connecting the Dots Day 2 Reflection

Wow today was fun! Students were definitely more engaged and participatory compared to their first day. Yesterday students were trying to figure out what was happening but today they were more on top of things. They were actively listening, participating in the larger group discussion, sharing their opinions and taking notes.

Things that I think we can improve are incresing the wider group discussion as some people still remain silent. Having candies has helped with that but we need better incentives. Also, the ice-breaker took much longer than expected. We had to cut on the activity time because of that.

Having the larger group discussion on global citizenship briefly and then asking them what they remembered as wordwide issues that we all face with was a good start to the lesson. Then asking them what they thought on quality education, why we need it, why they thought it was a sustainable development goal, etc. kept their interest up. I enjoyed seeing them taking notes as I was presenting on the Turkish education system and then they made some structured comments about it. They said they found the presentation informative. That was part of it - to increase their knowledge on different countries and their issues as global citizens then later to connect those issues with their local communities.

These students are good! I am also learning a lot from them! I think this is what makes this project great!

Today, was better than yesterday. I focused on engaging with students that don't speak up as much or seem to become easily disinterested in the information. Keeping the energy in the room is so important and I want to keep that energy for the rest of the week. I'm seeing that getting them moving is key to keeping their interest.

Below are my pros, cons, and solutions for today:

Pros

Everyone stayed awake and alert

Started off with music and set the tone for the day

Rewards help incentivize participation (Candy)

Cons

Hesitancy to embrace wrong answers

Keeping time and the pace

Not having a solid wrap-up at the end of class because we are in a rush

Solutions

Give the students the encouragement to be loud and wrong instead of second guessing themselves and whispering

Keep a timer to make sure that the lesson doesn't overtake their activity time.

Speak with other instructors

Overall, today was another win!!!

I have to say I was very organized but very nervous going into day 1, typical right? I was pleasantly surprised with how the class went today. The students were super engaged and seemed interested in the content and art projects Daniel and I will be engaging in this week! Our our projects will be to create a PSA video as well as a t-shirt that showcases all that we have learned from the week. Located below, as promised, is my PSA video that I made about Colorism.

What went well:
- After providing examples of the negative effects media can have on cultural and implicit bias, our students engaged in conversations that respected opposite view points and mentioned some of the key issues of each video. I think as the week goes on we will have no issue getting them to engage in conversation about our topic.
- Our silent icebreaker also gave the students a chance to loosen up and get to know each other even though it was slightly different than a typical icebreaker. I think this activity also gave them a visual representation of what implicit bias looks like.

What to consider for tomorrow:
- I thought the students did well answering questions when you asked them something very specific rather than a more broad question. This is a good observation for me because I know how to tailor my questions to help them engage in conversation/.
- We had a few key talkers in class today so taking the idea of making it a rule that someone different from each table has to talk may be a great idea going into the next few days of class.

Great job today everyone! I'm looking forward to the rest of the week :))

Today, was a great start to the week. I feel as though my group set a great pace filled with information and action that we can keep up throughout the week. I enjoyed hearing the responses from the scholars and giving them the encouraging nudge to show them that regardless of their response they should say them with confidence. I have a lot of experience with expounding upon others ideas and helping them see the bigger picture. The scholars have really great insights on the importance of being a global citizen and I want them to continue down the path to see why that's important.

Below are my pros, cons, and solutions for today:

Pros

Being over prepared with material

Having high levels of energy

Engaging and motivating all students to participate

Adapting to the situation

Cons

After lunch lag and sleepiness

Being more clear with our messages

Solutions

Give the students more opportunities to stand and move around

Be precise with what we want to say and not include too much narration unless it directly pertains to the message and is relatable to the students

Speak slower and confirm understanding of material

Overall, today was a success for me. Fingers crossed that we will receive the rest of the supplies tomorrow. Hopefully, they are just in another room waiting for meeeeeee.

<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Title: <span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400; text-decoration: underline; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Exploring Cultural Biases in Media: Changing the narrative through Graphic Design and Visual Media

<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Description: This week each student will be challenged to think about the effects media can have on the current cultural biases polluting our world. Cultural bias can be defined as the act of passing judgment on others based on your own cultural preferences and beliefs.

<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Throughout the week we will explore how cultural biases impact us on a global and local scale. The week will begin globally by looking into the current immigration crisis world-wide. While learning about the different effects of cultural biases on a global scale, students will be encouraged to explore their own personal biases as well as the biases they see in their own communities. Through this process, students will create PSA style videos that will be viewed at the final banquet. Videos will use humor, drama, and straight talk to blast a message of diversity and unity instead of conflict and mistrust. Students will also create a one-of-a-kind t-shirt that can serve as an advertisement of diversity in their own communities.

I'm not sure if you all ran into this issue but I was having a problem submitting comments on here. Below is the response to my issue from Shareef:

"After poking around for a while, it looks like blogger has problems with the embedded comment forms. In the blog settings, the default for posting comments is to make a comment box appear while you're viewing the page (embedded). This is apparently known to have issues. In fact, I was not able to make comments either. Fortunately, however, it appears that switching to a different commenting method fixes the issue.

So now when you go to add a comment, it will take you to a new page where you can submit your comment. It's a bit less convenient, but it works."

I hope this helps!

Across the globe, members of queer communities fight for their right to love, work, and live free from fear and oppression. Through creative, cultural, and political advocacy, they have found ways to flourish despite legal, religious, and social persecution. However, both at home and abroad, high rates of forced homelessness, stigma, exclusion, job insecurity, incarceration, and violence against queer people persist. This course calls attention to these injustices as they exist on local and global scales while also celebrating queer identities, queer joy, and queer activism. The course promotes a complex understanding of gender, sexuality, and justice by exploring many of the pressing issues that queer people have faced at different times and in different parts of the world. The course will also investigate how other oppressions such as racism, classism, ableism, and xenophobia contribute to heterosexism and transphobia. By creating original zines (mini-magazines that combine poetry and visual art with information about a specific topic), course participants will share what they have learned with the rest of the Balfour community and become accomplices in the struggle for queer liberation.
Excited to see the progress in your courses. Please become a learning community by using the blog as a place to give feedback ideas etc. I made comments in some of your group posts to try to spur convo. Huge shout out to Alex for her feedback to "The Propaganda of Culture" class course description. - This is the kind of depth that we are going for with each other.
A couple of overall thoughts:
1. Course titles: Most are long and do not clearly include a global issue (or the global) or an art form(s) or Cultures. The exception is the Cultures of Migration course. While Cultures is broader than art - it includes art and their course title includes a global issue as well. Queer Liberation also includes both (global issue: queer liberation + art: zines - however it is very long!) So, Propaganda, Queer Liberation and Connecting the Dots groups, please shorten (while including global issue and art forms or cultures) Put yourself in the mindset of a rising HS senior.
2. Course descriptions: These should be one paragraph. What are students going to study/do/create. How will they do it. Why is your global issue(s) important and relevant locally?
3. Lesson Plan: The only actual lesson plan that I find as a google doc is for the Cultures of Migration group. It is a great template and allows all of us to make comments on the side of the document. I see that Queer Liberation is well on the way to creating a lesson plan - it is worthy of taking a look as well.
4. Posting: Speak to your "fellow" facilitators. There are no mistakes only shared community. And get help! Shareef is awesome: more than technical consultant he cares about this stuff! Contact him if you hit a snag with posting, uploading etc. (I do!) Send him course description, draft lesson plan.
5. Blog vs Email: We are trying to live in the blog but if you send email, cc Shareef, Vesna and me.
6. Tick Tock: We are getting close. Vesna and I are here - in the blog, on the phone, email.
7. Gratitude: Thanks for being on this journey and growing these seedling ideas into fab classes.Amy Horowitzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18225230958618150459noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2030352697022808.post-41933480206638139472019-06-10T10:43:00.003-07:002019-06-16T11:01:24.477-07:00Queer Liberation Across Space and Time: Exploring Power, Identity, and Justice through Zines Hi all! Tiffany and I are creating a unit on Queer Liberation. This month is the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, which many people mark as the catalyst for the gay rights and/or queer liberation movement in the U.S. Across the globe, many queer people continue to live precarious lives even as some queer communities are flourishing. Queer art forms like drag and other types of performance art have become more normalized, and a number of countries have passed legislation that supports things like marriage equality and gender affirmations on birth certificates and drivers licenses. However, high rates of homelessness, negative mental health issues, job insecurity, pay gaps, incarceration, and violence against queer people persist. It is important that students develop an understanding of the local and global nature of these problems, many of which are simultaneously rooted in xenophobia, racism, classism, and ableism. Solutions to the injustices that face queer people are complex and contextual -- problematically, many global solutions are rooted in white saviorism and a poor understanding of cultural norms/beliefs in certain parts of the world, which ends up reifying homophobia/transphobia etc. as opposed to eliminating it. People in the West think of themselves as enlightened when it comes to queer issues, even as queer people in the U.S. and Europe face alarming rates of persecution, violence, and discrimination (particularly when queer people are multiply-marginalized on the basis of citizenship, race, class, religion, and/or ability). Our unit will challenge students to consider:

1. How gender, sex, and sexuality are constructed and controlled in different places/times
2. How queer people have fought back against oppression and violence at various times, in various parts of the world, and in various eras
3. How and why queer people celebrate their identities // what queer people have contributed to artistic, activist, political, scientific, and social life (among other things)
4. What indigenous sexualities and genders can teach us about current scientific beliefs and practices regarding gender/sexuality
5. How queer communities form and what "community" means for marginalized peoples in different places and times
6. How to develop a queer consciousness that is rooted in challenging binary thinking, celebrating anti-normativity, questioning the status quo, and resisting injustice
7. How to consider the limits and problems associated with placing an "American" or "Western" perspective on the lives of queer people across the globe.
8. Given, these complexities, how to support queer people at home and abroad.
9. What zines are and how they operate as counter-cultural art pieces that advance messages of justice and equity for marginalized peoples.

No less important, our unit will also introduce key terms associated with LGBTQ+ communities so that students can feel confident talking about and describing their own experiences and those of others. Students will understand that language changes over time and that it is also often geographically situated (i.e., words that are OK in one context or era may not be in another // words that describe similar things may not be the same throughout the world).

We are not yet certain what the art piece is going to be -- we are thinking either poetry or zines. Zines are brief, self-published mini-magazines that combine information on a particular topic with original artwork (collage, drawing, poetry etc.). Zines are usually then photocopied and widely disseminated. Each day of the unit, students will explore a few zines that are relevant to the specific topic at hand in order to get a better sense of the genre (style and content).

So far, we are considering doing the following:

1. Monday: Introduce gender/sex/sexuality, key terms, and personal experiences -- we are going to bring in symbols associated with particular identities (pride flags from around the world, pink triangle) and discuss what it means to reclaim words/symbols that have been used to oppress queer people in the past. We'll ask them to reflect on when/what they have learned about queer identities/people in school, church, at home etc. We'll develop a working list of key concepts/essential understandings & begin developing our zine.

2. Tuesday: Queer Communities and Oppression -- we're going to look at the various ways in which queer people have been and continue to be oppressed throughout the world. Our current idea is to explore interviews with young queer activists and artists who talk about their experiences and what it means to be queer in their community/country. We'll identify similarities and differences between experiences and try to come up with some general understandings of the realities facing queer people on local and global scales. We'll continue to develop our zine.

3. Wednesday: Legislation -- we will explore specific pieces of legislation throughout the world, from marriage equality bills to death penalties for homosexual behaviors. Students will interact with news articles, photographs, and original historical documents. It will be critical for students to know and understand how U.S. policies have constrained its own citizens as well as citizens of other countries, including when the U.S. purports to celebrate and advocate for queer lives. Zine Day #3

4. Thursday: Resistance and Celebration -- On this day, we will explore different activist and artistic movements that oppose injustice and revel in queer love/lives. We will probably bring in photographs, videos, images, manifestos, and excerpts of writings, including but not limited to ACT UP, Stonewall, transnational activisms in the Global South, and prison abolition. Zine Day #4

5. Friday: Putting It All Together -- We'll reflect on major themes and discuss what we can do to support queer liberation, including coming up with a list of recommendations for allies (small picture, big picture). We'll finish our zine!

Years ago, I arrived at my own definition (narrowed down and way over simplified) that I use in my classroom when I teach about the connections between students, their artwork and "their culture."

"Culture is the set of shared attitudes, values, goals, and practices of groups of people."

When I ask my students to think about culture they will often think of cultural traits or stereotypes that they do not possess. I find it annoying when at the fairly rural high school that I teach, students will make sure to tell me that, "they aren't country"...whatever that means. Just joking. I know what that means.

Did you notice what I did there? In the last paragraph. When attempting to discuss "Culture" I exposed my own cultural bias. (Here's a recap:I find it annoying when at the fairly rural high school that I teach, students will make sure to tell me that, "they aren't country"...whatever that means.) The only thing this sentence is missing is an Eye Roll emoji! The fact is, I grew up in a rural area and would go out of my way to act .....get this...."not country" The cultural bias is that country people are not smart or drive tractors or....anyway, Neither of those things are true about most people I know that grew up in rural areas. (Most people. There I go again...okay, now insert the eye roll emoji....)
Conversation?...
Fellow Facilitators:
I'm interested in your ideas:
1.) What is your definition(s) of culture? (All answers general and specific welcome)
2.) Do you have any specific examples of cultural biases other than the obvious such as racism, agism, religionism and classism, etc..
3.) Any specific Cultural biases that you may have overcome and how?
Culture and International citizenship are critical ingredients to being a successful Balfour scholar. In Indiana, it's even more interesting to observe the trends in immigration over the years.

In Central Indiana, in particular, the trend is even more fascinating as the diverse and international nature of migration becomes evident. Beneath the sunshine, a diverse culture that awaits all who thirst for the experience.
